The clocks have gone forward, Easter eggs are on the shelves and we’re all still wearing our winter coats. It must be March! Here’s what we got up to this month.

Google confirm that we should ‘remain focused on building great content’

Great content is the way forward according to Google who shocked everyone this month by introducing a new core algorithm update despite saying there was ‘nothing to fix’.

Google have previously been criticised for targeting low-quality web pages in the past, but the sites that lost rankings this time did not do so because of signals of low quality. According to Danny Sullivan who runs the SearchLiason Twitter handle,

‘There’s nothing wrong with pages that may now perform less well. Instead, it’s that changes to our systems are benefiting pages that were previously under-rewarded’

He also sent this tweet which gave users a springboard to jump from:

This article by Search Engine Journal points out that even if you have great content you should be looking for ways to satisfy your audience better. User Intent is key.

The best way to proceed is to study the winners in your market, what they’re doing and why they’re ranking well.

The subdomain vs. subfolder debate

Moving subdomain to subfolder (almost always) increases search traffic… and there’s plenty of evidence to prove this.

Our favourite ex-Moz-man Rand Fishkin compiled this Twitter thread list of handy case studies to consult whenever you’re in need of a little backup.

Underlines loved our lingerie insights…

The findings from our latest Lingerie Digital Insight Report were featured in Underlines Magazine this March.

Highlights from the report included:

  • Impressive visibility increases for La Senza (137%) and Boux Avenue (57%) who remain the market leaders
  • Victoria’s Secret remain the most searched-for brand
  • Bluebella stood out with their fantastic link-building and PR-led content

You can read the full report here.

And Retail Jeweller shone a light on our Jewellery Report

It seems everyone wants in on our research this month as we featured in Retail Jeweller with our latest Jewellery insights.

The standout findings were:

  • Claire’s made their way into the top 10 after a 290% increase in visibility
  • Pandora made the top spot for social, but it was Tiffany whose content sparkled
  • Swarovski have a very high volume of average quality links

Behind the scenes: photoshoot exclusive

The whole office got our best Blue Steel pouts on for a photoshoot. Even our dogs got involved, though they didn’t need as much direction as some people.

We can’t say what it’s for yet, but all will be revealed very soon!

For now, here’s a dashing BTS snap of Dave Ryan loving the limelight (bonus points if you spot Martyn):

Dave Ryan

Hello New Insiders!

Clearly, our talk of dogs and doughnuts in the last monthly roundup worked a treat as we had two new joiners this month.

We’ve got a new PR & Campaigns Executive, Nick, who has been busy outreaching our fantastic client and inbound work (including those digital insight reports!). Nick used to be a journalist so now he’s on the other side of the table.

We also welcomed Tom into the fold. He’s our new Digital Marketing Executive and works within our busy data team. A fun fact about Tom is that he plays at open Mic nights around Liverpool and Manchester so keep your eyes peeled!

Busy with birthdays

We’ve had 6 birthdays this month! Happy birthday to:

  • SEO Campaign Manager, Dave R
  • Digital Data Executive, Martyn
  • Managing Director, Andy
  • Lead Designer, Courtney
  • PR & Campaigns Executive, Nick
  • Content Marketing Executive, Gemma

National Puppy Day

Well, it wouldn’t be a monthly catch up without a #PuppyPic. And we always like to end on a high.

23rd March was National Puppy Day and we were lucky enough to have 2/3 of our IO doggos in the office. So, of course, we did what any sane office full of dog lovers would do and took photos. LOOK HOW CUTE THEY ARE.
